The search intensifies for Victor Birchfield, a 61-year-old man from Carter County, Tennessee, who vanished under mysterious circumstances and may have crossed paths with a fugitive from law enforcement. Clemson Police Department has now joined the efforts to locate Birchfield, as reported by WYFF4. The case took a grave turn after indications that the missing man's vehicle was possibly commandeered by an escaped inmate, Billy Fletcher, who absconded from a Carter County Detention Center work detail on June 20.
Adding to the complexity of the manhunt, Birchfield was last seen leaving his job at the Elizabethton Airport, leading investigators to meticulously try to piece together his subsequent movements. His daughter horrifyingly revealed to QC News that after losing communication with her father, she began to panic on Friday morning. She stated, "The sheriff’s department was able to tell me Friday night that they pinged the car’s location in Boone, North Carolina and in Clemson." Following this distressing news, bank records showed two charges made on her father's card in Asheville and at the Tiger Mart in Clemson.
Authorities are still trying to fully understand the connection between Birchfield and the inmate, if any exists. Before the disappearance, neither Birchfield nor his family had any known association with Fletcher. However, there is a growing concern that the escapee might indeed have access to Birchfield's personal effects, as his daughter surmises. "She believes Fletcher has her dad and his belongings," according to information she divulged during an interview.
With the search intensifying and widening, local communities have been alerted to be on the lookout for any sign of the missing man or the escaped inmate. The last sighting reported of Birchfield placed him wearing an orange or red shirt and gray basketball shorts, getting into his car alone. Both the missing man's family and law enforcement are asking the public to come forward with any information that could to help resolve the unsettling case.
