In a somber update from Lake Michigan, officials have confirmed the recovery of two children after a sailboat capsized near Chambers Island in Wisconsin. The bodies of a 5-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son were located on Monday, as reported by People. Named Charlotte and Josh, the children were sailing with their father, 32-year-old Bill Salnick of Little Suamico, Wis., when they went missing. The sailboat, an 18-foot Gulf Coast named My Lady Blue, was found capsized early Monday morning.
The search efforts, which had to tragically recover the two young lives, are still in the process of finding their father, who remains missing. As detailed by CBS News, the family did not return to their planned destination, heightening concerns when they could not be reached Saturday evening. It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that the Oconto County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the missing individuals. The Coast Guard and various local agencies have been working tirelessly through land, air, and sea to locate Salnick.
MLive reported that the children were found one mile south of where the My Lady Blue was discovered just off of Chambers Island. Salnick's items, including his truck and trailer, were located at the boat launch, and his phone was found to be going directly to voicemail, leading authorities to intensify their search efforts after being notified nearly a day after they were last seen.
The tragically unfolded incident ignited a wide search operation involving numerous authorities. According to People, the search included the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and multiple county sheriff's offices and emergency services. Efforts to find Salnick are ongoing, with no immediate plans to cease until he is located. Information concerning the tragic incident continues to develop as the search for Salnick enters its next phase.
