In a somber incident on the streets of Arden Arcade, a woman in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a semi-truck this past Friday morning. As reported by ABC10, the collision occurred around 10:20 a.m. at the busy intersection of Fulton and Alta Arden Expressway. According to the California Highway Patrol, the woman was attempting to cross at the intersection's crosswalk when the tragedy unfolded.
The driver of the semi-truck, a man in his 40s, had stopped at a red light on the westbound side of Alta Arden Expressway. As the light changed, and paralleling the movement of daily life, the woman started to cross the street, at the same time that the truck initiated a right-hand turn onto Fulton Avenue. In the midst of this turn, the truck came into contact with the woman, causing fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident; her identity has yet to be disclosed. Neither alcohol nor drugs are considered factors in the crash, as per the CHP's findings.
Additional coverage by CBS Sacramento notes that officers remained on-site throughout the morning to investigate the circumstances of the collision. As of now, there has been no mention of any charges filed or citations issued in relation to the incident. The woman's name continues to be withheld, pending the notification of next of kin.
The intersection where the accident took place is known to be a busy conduit for traffic in the North Sacramento region, raising concerns about pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas, especially for those with disabilities or mobility impairments. This fatal accident has yet again highlighted the inherent dangers at street crossings, and, there will likely be calls for improved safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. As the community reels from this tragic loss, questions linger about what could have been done to prevent such an accident, and what steps can be taken to ensure the safety of all pedestrians moving forward.
