
A Summerville man tragically lost his life in a fireworks-related incident during a Fourth of July celebration. Allen Ray McGrew, 41, succumbed to injuries sustained when a large firework device he placed on his head exploded. Dorchester County Sheriff's Office deputies and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene in the Crestwood subdivision around 10:23 p.m., where they discovered McGrew with severe head trauma.
According to a statement obtained by QC News, witnesses at the gathering immediately identified the devastating incident as a fireworks accident. Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers stated that McGrew ignited the firework device before setting it onto his head, which resulted in "massive head injuries."
The coroner pronounced McGrew dead at 11:10 p.m., leaving the community to mourn the abrupt and shocking loss on what is widely known as a day for celebration and unity. Reflecting the gravity of the situation, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office alongside the coroner's office promptly began an investigation to more thoroughly understand the events leading to McGrew's untimely passing.
