A Tampa Police Department officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law and is now on administrative leave after being arrested for an alleged Battery Domestic Violence. The incident involving the officer, identified as Cornelius Young, unfolded at an off-duty event located at 729 Cortaro Drive in Sun City.
According to the Tampa government's official statement, the arrest took place on July 17, precipitated by what started as a verbal altercation that escalated to physical violence with an adult female victim known to him. Young, who began his tenure with the TPD in November 2023, caused minor injuries to the victim during the dispute.
"To say this is disappointing is an understatement," expressed Chief Lee Bercaw in the wake of the arrest. He continued, "Our thoughts are with the victim involved. We are committed to transparency with our internal investigation. The allegations don’t represent the mission of the Tampa Police Department." These remarks reflect a department grappling with the realities of domestic violence within its own ranks.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing, as stated by Tampa officials, and Young will remain on administrative leave until its conclusion. This suspension serves as a reminder that those charged with upholding the law are not exempt from being held accountable to it. Young's future with the department hangs in the balance as the internal probe seeks to uncover the truth behind the allegations leveled against him.
