A fatal incident during an eviction on Manderson Road in Detroit's west side has left one man dead and sparked an investigation by local authorities. The confrontation, which occurred yesterday, escalated rapidly when a bailiff dispatched to carry out the eviction was forced to break into the home after the tenant failed to respond, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Inside, law enforcement officials found the tenant seated on a bed holding what appeared to be a weapon.
Detroit police and mental health personnel were summoned to the scene to assist the tenant, who was reportedly experiencing mental distress and refused to cooperate with the eviction process, as mentioned in coverage by WWJ Newsradio. The tense situation escalated when a taser deployed by a police officer failed to subdue the man, after which point he charged at the bailiff. The bailiff responded by discharging his firearm, resulting in the man's death.
Details surrounding the shooting are limited as the Detroit Police Department continues its investigation into the ordeal. Capt. Philip Rodriguez of the Detroit Police stated, "Officers negotiated with him for approximately 10 minutes," and due to the tenant's increased aggression, tasers were used in an attempt to control the situation, according to Click on Detroit. Unfortunately, their efforts were not successful in preventing the fatal outcome.
The identity of the tenant has not been released to the public. Meanwhile, the bailiff involved in the shooting, an independent contractor authorized by Detroit's 36th District Court, is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, as is the uninjured Detroit police officer at the scene. Chief Judge William C. McConico expressed the court's support for everyone affected by the unfortunate events and stated that they are eagerly awaiting further details from the police probe, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.
