In the wake of the critical CrowdStrike outage that has left numerous devices vulnerable, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is stepping up to the plate, issuing a stark warning to all residents: watch out for scammers looking to capitalize on this digital calamity. According to a consumer alert published by the Texas Attorney General's office, these unsavory individuals see chaos as opportunity, and Paxton is advising Texans to stay sharp and protect their digital footprint with heightened vigilance.
With malice disguised in the chaos, Paxton pointed out that slick-talking scammers might slide into Texans' DMs, ring them up out of nowhere, shoot over a suspicious email, or even pop up with a message on social media, preying on fears and uncertainties by posing as CrowdStrike representatives in a bid to snag sensitive login details and other personal information. Paxton warns,"Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, visits, texts, emails, or messages on social media asking about login credentials to your computer," signaling a clear message for residents to keep a tight grip on their personal data.
The looming threat has prompted urgent guidance from the Attorney General, directing individuals to act swiftly should they suspect they've been drawn into a scammer's web. Change those passwords, he advises, especially if you've let any slip in a moment of uncertainty, and if those passwords have been reused across multiple sites now's the time for a fresh start. Password hygiene can't be stressed enough in times like these when your very identity could hang in the balance.
And if you feel you've crossed paths with a scammer, or worse, played into their hands, Paxton urges prompt reporting to the necessary authorities within your organization; time is of the essence as these digital bandits are swift and leave little room for delay, so getting in touch with customer support or your company's IT team can't wait. As Paxton's office advises, "Immediately change any passwords you might have revealed," and stay one step ahead of the scammers lurking in the shadows of this technological disruption.
