In a genuine display of solidarity and support, officers from over a dozen Texas police departments provided crucial assistance to Houston in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief Larry Satterwhite recognized these efforts, with gratitude towards the officers who helped keep the city safe while local police took necessary time off to attend to their families and homes affected by the storm.

Last Thursday, officers from entities including the Department of Public Safety, converged in Houston due to a partnership orchestrated by the Texas Division of Emergency Management. Over a four-day period, they joined forces with Houston Police Department (HPD) personnel to carry out around-the-clock patrolling, addressed emergency calls, and assisted in subduing criminal elements in the city. Notable achievements from their collaboration included the arrest of a sought-after murder suspect and an aggravated assault suspect, these operations were backed financially by the TDEM.

The spirit of cooperation was tangible as officers from various agencies teamed up for initiatives such as halting burglaries in the city. Mayor Whitmire, having seen the inter-agency dynamics firsthand during a weekend ride along, praised the commitment shown by the officers, “I applaud the commitment and professionalism of the men and women who were backing up our hardworking Houston police officers. I thank TDEM for paying the costs associated with this plan. It is a great model of collaboration during a crisis and a really good experience that helped to keep Houston safe after Hurricane Beryl caused damage and knocked out power to our traffic lights and thousands of homes and businesses," Whitmire said in a statement. With the immediate crisis abating, the supplementary officers parted ways on Monday, with the Mayor expressing confidence in Houston's current stability.

Reflecting on integral bonds formed during the operation, HPD Acting Chief Satterwhite suggested that these collaborative efforts could serve as a prototype for future responses to crises. "There were lifetime friendships formed among some of our officers and those from our partner agencies,” Satterwhite said in a public acknowledgment.

The City of Houston extended its appreciation to numerous participating agencies, including San Antonio PD, Dallas PD, Texas DPS, and several others.
