A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was shot in the chest trying to defend his mother during a carjacking incident in Deer Park. The teen and his mother were attacked yesterday around 9 p.m. in the 8000 block of Spencer Highway, as FOX 26 Houston reported. According to Houston police, the suspect demanded the car as the woman was leaving work, and when her son attempted to protect her, the suspect shot him.

The suspect fled the scene, initiating a series of pursuits involving the Houston police and Harris County Precinct 8 constable deputies. The chase included the suspect briefly managing to completely evade officials after driving the wrong way on a highway. He was, however, subsequently spotted on I-610 where another chase ensued, according to ABC13. Their photojournalist captured dashcam video of the silver car involved in the chase, nearly colliding with their vehicle head-on.

The pursuit came to an abrupt halt in southwest Houston at the 5800 block of Creekbend Drive. Here, the suspect reportedly lost control and crashed into two parked cars, one of which was pushed into a garage. As per the scene's video coverage, despite the substantial property damage, no injuries were reported for the residents of the house. "This ended the best possible way it could have after the incident," Lt. J.P. Horelica was quoted in the ABC13 report. "The only thing that could make it better is if the kid gets better and turns out fine."

The teen was transported to the hospital by Life Flight, and is in serious or critical condition. The suspect was taken into custody following the crash and is facing multiple charges, including aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, and evading. Additional charges could potentially be pressed depending on the outcome of the teen's condition. FOX 26 Houston notes that authorities will contact the Harris County District Attorney’s Office concerning these charges. Both outlets have yet to release the names of those involved in the carjacking and the subsequent chase.
