The days of complimentary curbside parking at Sunset Beach on Treasure Island are drawing to a close with a new charge slated to take effect starting July 29, as city officials implement a parking fee aimed at managing congestion and encouraging the use of designated city lots. Commencing next week, visitors looking to park on the side streets of Sunset Beach will need to pull up their smartphones and use the ParkMobile app to cover a $5 hourly fee, a change incurring costs 24/7, WFTS-TV reports.
While the main thrust of the strategy appears to be a beneficial push towards the utilization of city parking lots, which charge a slightly lower hourly rate of $3.75, the encompassing goal is to ensure public safety and maintain accessibility for the beach's residential community; the officials delineated the particulars of the charged parking spaces with respect to street location and permissible parking configurations, noting that enforcement will leverage license plate reading technology to streamline compliance checks, as elaborated by WTSP.
Local residents will not be left out in the cold with this shift, as they will be eligible for up to two annual parking passes, each costing $45, providing a much-needed respite from what would otherwise have been a relentless metering schedule, WFLA informs.
Despite such concessions made for residents, the new parking measure has stirred up varying reactions among beachgoers—with some frustrated over the abrupt termination free parking, tensions accentuated by the hefty consequence a $60 fine imposed on violators found skirting the new protocol; as officials advise keen attention to street parking signage to obviate any costly misunderstandings, also informing visitors to remain abreast of the regulations that differ depending on the day and the street in question.
