The University of Central Florida Police have detained a man on allegations of executing a long-term financial ruse, presenting himself as a university athlete in need of short-term financial help. Identified as 22-year-old Xavier Eugene Dorcely, the accused reportedly duped various individuals on campus out of money with promises to reimburse them – a pledge he failed to fulfill. Dorcely operated between October 2023 and June 2024, according to ClickOrlando.
Law enforcement utilized surveillance and license plate recognition technologies to pinpoint Dorcely, who reportedly was involved in the scam for approximately nine months. The ruse consisted of him approaching his victims, feigning financial duress under the guise of a student-athlete struggling with rent and bills. He convinced multiple people to deliver him money, exploiting their goodwill, with assurances of repayment the next day, as detailed by WESH.
The University of Central Florida Police Department has stressed the importance of caution, advising the public to protect personal information and be wary of too-good-to-be-true requests. In light of the allegations, UCFPD is actively seeking out other potential victims who may have interacted with Dorcely, also known as Deandre or Dre. The department invites those affected to reach out, suggesting direct communication with Detective Melissa Guadagnino, as reported by WESH.
After his arrest, Dorcely faces charges of scheming to defraud, but additional charges are pending as the investigation develops and more victims are anticipated to come forward. While locked up in Seminole County, the police urge anyone else who might have been swindled by Dorcely to call the department's non-emergency line, as detailed by ClickOrlando.
