A United Airlines flight, operating with a Boeing 757-200, safely touched down in Denver following a concerning incident where one of its wheels detached during takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). United Flight 1001 which had taken off around 7:15 a.m. PT, carried 174 passengers and seven crew members onboard — all of whom remained unharmed. NBC Los Angeles reported that the airline has acknowledged the event and stated that the lost wheel has been located in Los Angeles.
"United Flight 1001 landed safely in Denver after losing one wheel on takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport," United Airlines conveyed in a statement. The cause of the detachment is currently under review. Aviation expert Mike Boyd offered an insight to NBC Los Angeles, noting that such mishaps might often point to maintenance issues rather than manufacturing defects. Despite the alarming nature of the incident, passengers remained largely unaware of the situation until later in the flight.
Mid-flight, passengers were informed about the emergency landing by the pilot. Allen Stubblefield, a traveler on the flight, shared his experience with CBS News, stating that the takeoff appeared perfectly normal. He related that the pilot's announcement was not met with panic and that the flight proceeded uneventfully until the "brace, brace, brace," call from a flight attendant signified the start of an atypical landing sequence. “It was not the smoothest landing and I didn't expect that," he said. "There was a bump, but that was it.”
