Harris County is facing a critical challenge: the surge of drunk-driving fatalities, particularly prominent in July and August. An effort to quell this tide is being led by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), which is deploying a multitude of strategies to tackle impaired driving across the state, with a focused eye on the Houston area. Last year's tally stood at a staggering 4,665 DUI-alcohol related traffic incidents within surrounding counties, resulting in 223 lives lost and 345 serious injuries, as per reports from TxDOT.

In a move to cut down these grim numbers, TxDOT's Houston District Director of Transportation Operations, Ugonna Ughanze, stresses the importance of interagency collaboration. “We are working across agency lines to take care of this problem in our region and we are using all the resources available to us,” Ughanze emphasized in a statement covered by TxDOT. His team's hands touch all aspects of traffic safety, from engineering savvy road designs and intersections to advancing traffic management systems adept at handling impaired wrong-way drivers.

With TxDOT at the helm, partners such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Houston Police Department, engage in regular dialogue to fortify their campaign against drinking and driving. "We’ve made great progress but there is still more work to do," TxDOT Traffic Safety staff member Trey Salinas told TxDOT.

To ensure the summer season doesn't unfold with the previous year's tinge of tragedy, a press conference punctuated by the presence of notable figures such as DA Kim Ogg, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, and Acting Houston Police Chief Larry Satterwhite, cast a spotlight on the concerted push to enforce impaired driving laws. Ogg made the stakes clear, “DWI and impaired driving are crimes that can hurt, maim or kill and would be completely preventable if everyone were to make a plan for a sober ride before they start drinking,” she articulated, as reported by TxDOT. A direct path from intoxication to incarceration is laid bare as a deterrent.

Supplementing enforcement initiatives, TxDOT's technology utilization comes into play with innovative interventions like the Houston ConnectSmart mobile app. Providing real-time travel updates and intermodal travel options, the app has coupled its utility with public safety by disseminating ride-hailing coupon codes, thereby influencing real-time decisions in favor of sober transportation alternatives. "Our goal is to encourage individuals to utilize ride-hailing services instead of driving under the influence (DUI), ultimately making our roads safer for everyone," Ughanze asserted, according to TxDOT.
