A man desired on multiple sex crime accusations was apprehended last Wednesday in Rowan County, after a tense standoff with law enforcement officials. Steven Joseph Borek faced a lengthy stalemate with deputies and U.S. Marshals at a Pilot Travel Center on Peeler Road, QCNews reported. The Rowan County Sheriff's Office identified Borek as the suspect under siege inside an RV after refusing deputies' commands to surrender.
Authorities arrived around 12:30 p.m. in an operation to serve Borek with arrest warrants on charges that include six counts of first-degree statutory sex offense, and, six counts of indecent liberties. Borek had barricaded himself within his recreational vehicle and was not initially receptive to the officers' demands. He was also observed with a knife, further escalating the situation, WCCB Charlotte detailed.
Following several failed negotiation attempts, the Special Response Team from the Rowan County Sheriff's Office decided to breach the RV. They found Borek on the floor with a knife wound to the neck that he had reportedly inflicted upon himself, as described by WBTV. The outcome of the standoff saw Borek being taken into custody and subsequently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
