A tragic incident occurred yesterday when John Nousaine, a 70-year-old Wisconsin man, died while scuba diving in Lake Superior. According to The Detroit News, the event took place at around 1 p.m. at Isle Royale National Park. Nousaine was diving toward the stern of the shipwreck, the Emperor, a 525-foot steel bulk freighter that sank in 1947.
Recreational divers from a private vessel were diving alongside Nousaine. Having reported the accident quickly to the National Park Service, the divers were not able to prevent this misfortune. WOODTV noted that an investigation into the accident is currently ongoing, adding context to the rarity of such events in this area which usually calls for experienced divers.
The depth of the area where Nousaine was diving ranges from 100 to 150 feet, which underscores the challenges intrinsic to shipwreck exploration in Lake Superior. The National Park Service confirmed that they have notified Nousaine's family about the heartbreaking event and are still looking into the cause of death along with the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office, as conveyed by Chris Amadon, a park service representative, as per The Detroit News.
