A woman has been arrested and charged in connection to the shooting of a 7-month-old boy in Philadelphia's Holmesburg neighborhood. The shooting, which occurred around 5:51 p.m. last Thursday on the 4000 block of Meridian Street, resulted in a swift response from law enforcement. According to 6abc, the suspect was taken into custody the following night and is currently awaiting formal charges.
The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has identified the suspect as Billups. She is facing three counts of aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime, and reckless endangerment of another person, among other charges, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia. In investigating homes connected to the suspect, police recovered an extended magazine and 11 rounds of ammunition. Furthermore, it was discovered that the parents of the infant were arrested on burglary warrants.
As this tragedy unfolded, a bystander emerged as a pillar of humanity amidst the chaos. The Good Samaritan, Berrios, is being recognized for his courageous act of rushing the injured infant to the hospital. Describing the intense moment, Berrios said, "I told them, ‘Trust me, I promise I’ll take care of your baby’," as told to FOX 29. His actions have been a sole beacon of hope in the harrowing incident, as he stayed with the baby through the transport to a trauma center.
While the events leading to the shooting are still being pieced together, investigators have pointed to a narcotics debt as a possible motive. Philadelphia Police Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum suggested that the violence stemmed from an outstanding $100 narcotics debt. The infant, at the time caught between the crosshairs of adult transgressions, is now receiving care and is said to have a strong support system, with arrangements being made for him to be released to the family.
