An 8-year-old girl has suffered serious injuries after a fall from a zipline at Camp Letts in the Edgewater area. As per the Anne Arundel County, Fire Department reports to WBALTV, the incident, which took place on Saturday, prompted a response from firefighters and EMS personnel around 2:40 p.m. following reports of a "long fall" at the camp located on the 4000 block of Camp Letts Road.
Details indicate that the child fell approximately 12 feet and was conscious when first responders arrived on the scene. She was subsequently airlifted to Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, where she is being treated for her injuries. A spokesperson described her condition as serious, according to CBS News Baltimore.
Camp Letts is operated by the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, and at the time of the accident, a private event was being hosted by an outside organization. It was further reported that an outside vendor was responsible for setting up the zipline for the event. "The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington has been informed that an attendee of a private event held by an outside organization was injured while on the YMCA Camp Letts Retreat Center property," a spokesperson said in a statement detailed by CBS News Baltimore. "It was reported to the YMCA that a juvenile guest fell while using an outside vendor's zipline set up specifically for the event. The Y sends prayers for the individual's full recovery."
The incident raises concerns about safety protocols and oversight when outside vendors are involved in providing recreational activities at camps. Current investigations are looking into the specifics of the fall and the safety measures that were in place.
