This week, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" has embarked on a significant project in Houston's Cypress area, specifically within the Mason Woods community. This endeavor marks the show's return to the airwaves, with a new home being constructed from scratch. The Houston Chronicle reported that filming began on August 17 and will continue through August 23, amidst a heatwave that has seen temperatures soaring into the triple digits.
Leadership at Taylor Morrison, the partner homebuilder for this project, has praised the cooperative spirit and dynamism at the site despite the heat. Todd Rasmussen, President of Taylor Morrison's Houston division told the Houston Chronicle, “It’s kind of like an organized chaos environment where it seems like a lot of people running around but everybody's got a job to do and they're focused,” About 1,000 volunteers have been aiding the build effort, propelled by a commitment to delivering to a deserving local family, whose identity remains under wraps until the show's airing in Spring 2025.
The Community Impact provided insight into the inspiring volunteer turnout seen at the Mason Woods build site. Liny Morris, who along with her husband joined the effort after learning about it through local news, expressed the collective sentiment of the volunteers: "It's neat to see so many people come together for this cause [because] everybody's got such a positive attitude and they're so willing to help," a sentiment shared by Rasmussen.
Crucial to the home's rapid assembly has been the sundry expertise volunteers bring to the table. According to Community Impact, Fred Morris, who has a background in electrical and plumbing, has been actively involved in the construction, while Liny Morris has been working in the catering department. Moreover, Alex Kemelmajer, another pivotal volunteer, and Taylor Morrison builder said, “Although it's hot and everything else, it's just a good time. You’ve got all the camaraderie of everybody being together, and you also get the understanding of what you're doing, which is a good thing. It's amazing.”
The schedule for completion is on or before August 23. Completing the house before the deadline will give The Home Edit designers, the new hosts of the show, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, the space to finesse the home with personalized accessories.
