An Abilene mother is demanding answers and action after her daughter suffered a painful and distressing ordeal at Taylor Elementary School.
During a playground accident that occurred on August 15, fourth-grader Alonna Barrow fell from the swings, resulting in fractures to both of her arms. Despite the severity of her injuries, the school's response was both lackluster and delayed, leaving her in pain for several hours without proper attention or her mother being notified. FOX San Antonio reports that the girl experienced immense pain, likening it to "a lot of fire ants biting me."
Teonnda Payne, the child's mother, expressed her outrage at the inadequate care provided by the school nurse and the lack of communication. In a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio, Payne revealed that the school nurse did not call her because she allegedly has too many kids coming in and out of her office and can't call every parent. Later on, Payne said someone from the Abilene Independent School District (AISD) informed her that she couldn't sue the district—a conversation that the district has yet to confirm or address beyond their general statement on the incident.
In response to the situation, Dr. John Kuhn, AISD's superintendent of schools, issued an apology, stating "I am truly sorry to the family involved for their student's injury" and promising immediate action to prevent recurrence, which includes reviewing health procedures and retraining nurses, as provided by FOX San Antonio.
Yet, an apology alone has done little to quell the mother's frustration or address the consequences of the incident. Payne told Yahoo News that her daughter's painful experience is not negated by AISD's apology, nor does it make up for the staff's oversight. Alonna's recovery is expected to take between 6-to-12 weeks, and she is to continue her schooling from home, with concerns about her potentially falling behind in her studies.
