Akron police are on the alert following two separate Facebook Marketplace robberies that took place within hours of each other, Cleveland.com reports. The first incident, which occurred in the 1200 block of Wilber Avenue at approximately 2:30 p.m., left a 24-year-old man robbed of his ATV at gunpoint by a group posing as buyers.
The would-be transaction unraveled when, upon the trio's arrival, one of the individuals brandished a handgun and made off with the vehicle. At the same time, his accomplices fled by foot from the South Akron neighborhood, according to Cleveland19 News. Subsequent police efforts to canvass the area resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old riding the stolen ATV on Ackley Street, roughly 15 minutes post-robbery. Officials have yet to identify the other participants involved in the scheme.
The Akron police department confirmed that the arrestee, currently held at the Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility, faces charges of robbery and receiving stolen property. This unsettling event marks increased crime linked to online sale platforms, prompting law enforcement to urge caution amongst those engaging in these digital marketplaces.
Details surrounding the second robbery remain sparse, but it is clear that it, too, involved a pre-arranged meeting to sell items via Facebook Marketplace. These two separate yet hauntingly similar occurrences have led to an ongoing investigation as detectives explore potential connections between the cases, WKYC details. These digital spaces where commerce and crime have begun to intersect so readily have become a new frontier for criminals and a battleground for local police forces, trying to maintain public safety while adapting to an ever-evolving landscape of technology-facilitated crime.
