The Akron Police Department has made public the bodycam and surveillance footage from the shooting of 54-year-old Michael Donnell Jones, a suspect in a vehicle theft at an East Avenue gas station on Aug. 17. The footage, released yesterday, captures the moments leading up to and following the fatal encounter between Jones and an Akron officer, an agency veteran of two and a half years, as reported by WKYC.
According to the video revealed by the department, the incident unfolded just after 1 a.m. Officers were seen to quickly engage with the suspect inside the allegedly stolen U-Haul truck. The situation escalated rapidly, as documented in the video, resulting in police shooting Jones. Cleveland19 reported the officers lunged into the vehicle in an attempt to detain Jones, which was followed by the car being driven away with officers inside.
The gas station's surveillance footage and bodycam footage from the two officers present at the scene were provided to transparently share the events of what transpired. The department's choice to release the videos comes amid ongoing discussions nationwide regarding police use of force and the accountability of law enforcement.
Details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under scrutiny. The Akron Police Department has stated that an investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The footage shows a tragic ending to what began as a response to a report of a stolen vehicle. According to NEWS 5 Cleveland, the shooting happened as Akron officers were intervening to investigate the reported theft, which rapidly turned into a confrontation that resulted in Jones' death.
