Ameir Trent, age 22, has entered a guilty plea in the shooting death of 15-year-old Devin Bannister that occurred in July of last year. The Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office announced that the plea was secured on Wednesday, leading to an immediate sentencing by Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Julie Lynch.

The case, prosecuted by Emalea Helisek and Jason Manning, concluded with Trent receiving a prison term of 15 to 17 years after pleading guilty to charges of reckless homicide and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, each accompanied by a 3-year firearm specification, as well as felonious assault. According to the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office release, the sentence imposed by Judge Lynch is the maximum possible under the law for the firearm specifications and the reckless homicide charge.

The fatal shooting incident took place on Zebulon Avenue in North Linden on July 18, 2022. It was reported that Trent, along with four juveniles, including Bannister, fired over 40 rounds into a residence where four people were inside. Believing his firearm to be empty, Trent discharged an additional shot while leaving the scene, which unintentionally struck Bannister through the front passenger seat as they were sitting in the car.

In the aftermath, Bannister was dropped off at Riverside Hospital by Trent and the juveniles, who then fled, where he later succumbed to his injuries. "Trent pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, each with 3-year firearm specification, as well as to felonious assault," states the release from the prosecuting attorney’s office. This case emphasizes the tragic consequences of firearms misuse and recklessness that have claimed yet another young life.
