There's a new name emblazoned in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and it's none other than Houston's very own Andre Johnson. The Texans icon, who spent 12 seasons with the franchise, has carved out a spot among the NFL's immortals, becoming the first player from the Texans to enter these hallowed ranks, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle. Despite a two-hour weather-induced holdup and a stuffed lineup of inductees, Johnson commanded the audience with an expression of earnest gratitude during his enshrinement speech.
In a direct homage to the influence of his upbringing, Johnson shared, "My mother made a decision that changed everything," alluding to a pivotal move orchestrated by his mom to shift his educational environment, noted the Houston Chronicle. A technical hiccup forced Johnson to spontaneously adjust his speech when the teleprompter went out, leading him to candidly reveal, "I’ve never been a guy who liked to write speeches. I like to speak from my heart. And it just felt better."
Johnson's accomplishments are extensive, to say the least: he is a four-time All-Pro and a seven-time Pro Bowler who has led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards twice. With a sterling record of 1,062 catches and 14,185 receiving yards, Johnson also boasts the record among Hall of Famers for most 100-plus reception seasons, as reported by ABC 3.
In what can only be described as a candid outpouring of appreciation, Johnson made certain to acknowledge the varied support system that propelled him to the heights he has reached - from his family to the myriad of teammates and coaches he encountered throughout his illustrious career. Not to be left out were the fans whom he assured, "we going to show up and show out," as per his sentiment shared with the Houston Chronicle. The crowd's resounding chants of "An-dre John-son!" underscored the mutual love affair between the athlete and the Texans faithful.
Reflecting on his journey, Johnson recounted in his speech an encounter with a Houstonian who predicted his Hall of Fame induction. This interaction highlights the deep-rooted connection amongst Johnson, the city of Houston, and the Texans community at large. His acknowledgment of this bond wasn't lost on the droves of fans who traveled to witness Johnson's most-defining career moment. According to the earlier mention on Houston Chronicle, he reminisced, "Seeing all those fans it didn’t surprise me at all. They truly embraced me and showed me so much love, right now, 'til this day. Like I said, I’m happy as hell to be their Pro Football Hall of Famer."
