Arlington's green thumb is getting a thumbs up. For a quarter of a century, Arlington has maintained its status as a Tree City USA community, a testament to the city's commitment to urban forestry and environmental stewardship. This long-standing honor, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in collaboration with federal forestry agencies, isn't just about bragging rights; it spotlights the city's strategic initiatives to cultivate and preserve its leafy landscape.
In a city where trees are more than just bark and leaves, they've become woven into Arlington's very identity. First recognized in 1999, Arlington has dedicated itself to nurturing its tree canopy, which isn't just a feast for the eyes but also a boon for wallets, shading homes and businesses from the relentless Texas sun, thereby crimping energy bills. As reported, Wendy Pappas, Urban Forestry Land Manager for Arlington Parks and Recreation, praised local efforts saying, as per the City of Arlington, "Trees provide so much to Arlington’s character, from creating beautiful neighborhoods and park spaces that bring pride to our community to providing shade that helps our residents and business owners save on energy costs."
An impressive average of 70.4 trees per acre has been clocked in selected parks and natural areas across Arlington, and little wonder, as these parklands now sport a diverse palette of 48 tree species. The urban forest is not just for show, it is providing palpable benefits: reducing urban noise pollution, keeping neighborhoods without trees several degrees hotter on the thermometer, and pulling their weight in lowering energy expenses by a substantial margin. Even the real estate market gives a nod to homes nestled among the greenery, commanding higher property values, while green spaces simultaneously play the role of an unseen therapist, offering a breath of fresh air for mental and physical well-being.
The city vows to keep this legacy growing without respite, working hand in glove with residents, businesses, and developers to ensure its canopy remains both a crown and a commitment. "We are proud of our long-time designation as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation and we will continue working with our residents, businesses and developers to protect and grow our urban tree canopy”, Pappas said, as cited by the City of Arlington.
