It's that period again when the City of Arlington's Public Works Department gears up to take an in-depth look into the state of streets in Central Arlington. This year, every street within the bounded area South of Park Row Drive and North of South Green Oaks Boulevard towards Interstate 20 is queued up for a comprehensive survey, marking the annual check-up of one-third of the City's streets.
The department plans to thoroughly assess the pavement condition by engaging a third-party contractor equipped with data collection vehicles. These vehicles are ready to quickly gather information spanning from smoothness to the severity of surface distresses like cracks and ruts on the roads. "Using technology to gather and record roadway data allows the City to develop a comprehensive and proactive approach to roadway management", as per the City of Arlington.
Factual data on the roadways enables a strategic allocation of the city’s road maintenance funds. Previous efforts, as reported, led to work on over 526 lane miles in the 2023 fiscal year, where the capital improvement project improved 10.7 of these miles, and the rest received either city staff or contractor-performed maintenance.
