Arlington residents will soon have the opportunity to weigh in on the city's financial roadmap for the upcoming year. Details have emerged on the City of Arlington's proposed $722 million Fiscal Year 2025 operating budget and two town hall meetings are now on the books to openly discuss the city's spending plans.
Citizens looking to quickly familiarize themselves with the proposed budget's contents can plan to attend the first meeting set for 6 p.m. tomorrow at the City Council Chamber located in City Hall at 101 W. Abram St. A second chance to directly engage with the budget will be offered at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, at the Arlington Police South District Service Center on 1030 SW Green Oaks Blvd. The focus of these sessions is to start to actively involve the community in the financial decision-making process and to clarify any complexities within the budget proposals.
Underlining the proposed budget are cost-saving measures intended to lighten the load on taxpayers, while also ensuring the implementation of improvements previously approved by voters. According to the City of Arlington, enhancements in public safety, street maintenance, and community cleanliness are among the focus areas. Adjustments include a one-cent property tax rate modification and incremental increases to water, garbage collection, and stormwater fees.
Today, before the town hall meetings, the City Council will propose to call for a public hearing concerning the budget and tax rate, to take place at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10. The Fiscal Year 2025 budget proposal presented to Council last Tuesday featured a tax rate set at $0.5998 per $100 of assessed value. This rate, however, remains subject to change based on further Council deliberations. This budget and business plan are aimed at fully supporting the City Council's strategic priorities, which include championing neighborhood excellence, undergirding youth and families, boosting the economy, advancing regional transportation, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and fostering community unity.
