The Austin area is gearing up for a mixed bag of weather conditions over the coming days with a gradual increase in rain chances as the week progresses. According to the National Weather Service, today there's a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms cropping up chiefly after 4 pm, and while the sun will play its role, the high could reach a sweltering 93 degrees. The heat index isn't playing games either—measuring in as high as 103.
As nighttime descends, the storm chances slim down to 30 percent before 7 pm then eases into a partly cloudy evening with the thermometer dipping to around 75 degrees. This relatively peaceful pattern is expected to change—KXAN reports that "a combination of a stalled front, a low in the Gulf of Mexico, plenty of moisture and daytime heating will all aid in the development of scattered to widespread rain" over the Labor Day weekend.
KXAN further remarks that Friday boasts a 30 percent likelihood of storms, primarily after 1 pm with high temperatures hovering near 92 degrees. The forecast continues in this vein through the weekend, with rain chances peaking at 50 percent on Sunday. The Labor Day outlook appears even wetter; showers likely and potentially a thunderstorm in the cards after 1 pm with a 60 percent chance of precipitation.
For outdoor activities planned over the holiday weekend, a cautious eye on the sky wouldn’t be amiss. While the rain isn't set to be a constant companion, its presence will be felt with the highest chances occurring during the typical heat of the afternoon and waning as the sun takes its leave. "Don’t cancel weekend plans as showers and storms will be on & off, but consider making some indoor back-up plans in case storms move through your area," recommends KXAN, signaling that while the sun might take a brief hiatus behind the clouds, the weekend can still be salvaged with a little forethought and flexibility.
