In the early hours of Saturday morning, a high-speed chase involving a suspected drunk driver unfolded in Oakland County, concluding with a dramatic crash. According to ClickOnDetroit, the Bloomfield Township Police Department responded to a report of an erratic driver at approximately 1 a.m., leading to a pursuit that ended when the suspect's vehicle struck a curb and a tree.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Justin Michael Luark from Bloomfield Hills, attempted to flee on foot but was swiftly taken into custody. Police records indicate he smelled strongly of intoxicants, and a subsequent breathalyzer test revealed a BAC of .153, nearly double the legal limit. Audacy reports that authorities also discovered a small bag suspected to contain Oxycodone inside Luark's white Toyota Tacoma.
The high-speed chase began on Telegraph Road and continued to Square Lake Road where Luark, ignoring police attempts to stop the vehicle, sped over 100 mph across all lanes of traffic. "Officers witnessed the vehicle on Telegraph approaching Square Lake road at a high rate of speed. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle," recounted an article from FOX 2 Detroit. The pursuit came to a sudden halt near Humphrey Avenue, not long after the Tacoma veered over a median and collided with a tree.
Luark now faces multiple charges, including second-degree fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing, operating while intoxicated, and driving without a license. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office has set his bond at $8,000 cash. Further charges may be forthcoming pending lab results of the pills recovered from Luark's vehicle. Luark was arraigned over the weekend, with the dangerous events leading up to his capture vividly captured on police dashcam and bodycam footage, available to the public.
