A Brownstown man is in custody after he opened fire on a group of people whose car had broken down outside his home. The incident occurred early yesterday morning and resulted in an hour-and-a-half-long standoff with police, which ended peacefully without injuries.

According to FOX 2 Detroit, the suspect, a 44-year-old resident of the neighborhood, first reported the disabled vehicle as a suspicious car to authorities. Not long after, the occupants of the vehicle, who were attempting to get help for their broken car, reported being under fire from the man who had called 911. Ken Hurst, a 40-year resident of the area, was caught off guard by the chaotic scene, stating to FOX 2 Detroit, "It’s crazy out there."

During the confrontation reported by The Detroit News, the man allegedly wielded a short barrel rifle and fired at the four men and two women who sought shelter behind their vehicles. Following the shooting, a police negotiator convinced the suspect to surrender after a standoff. During the event, which WXYZ reports lasted over an hour and a half, the suspect held his son inside the home. Mark Dow, a friend of one of the group members, recalled, "I backed up to the truck, got out, started hooking [the truck] up, he started pointing his gun at us and started screaming."

Deena Dow, Mark's mother, who learned about the terrifying episode while on vacation, confided to WXYZ, "My son could’ve just got killed". The group's close escape from harm highlighted a chilling reality that a mechanical failure could precipitate near tragedy. Authorities have yet to formally charge the suspect, but charges are forthcoming as a warrant request is being prepared for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
