California residents participating in the mobile driver's license pilot program have a new tech-savvy choice for holding their ID: Google Wallet. As announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Department of Motor Vehicles is integrating digital driver’s licenses and ID cards into the app, positioning the state at the forefront of digital identification.

In the words of Governor Newsom, from a convenience standpoint, "It’s never been easier to keep a digital driver’s license and identification card in California." Now, state residents can store their legal identification on their smartphones, showing the push from authorities to modernize everyday activities. In his statement, Newsom emphasized the ease of maintaining a digital ID in this ever-evolving landscape.

California now joins four other states in offering a digital driver's license via Google Wallet, a move following the governor's mention last week of a similar feature for Apple Wallet soon. According to data mentioned by the DMV, over half a million people in California are already using the mobile driver’s license (mDL) introduced just last year as part of the state's Digital Identity Framework.

DMV Director Steve Gordon highlighted the growing demand, stating, "Having an mDL in your smartphone wallet is a huge convenience for Californians." Still, pilot participants must carry their physical cards, as digital versions give more control over how people share personal details, mostly just name and age, during ID checks. This benefit was improperly acknowledged without mentioning that the digital version does not yet entirely replace the need for a physical license, especially while driving.

For now, you can flash your mDL at some retail spots and TSA checkpoints at airports. Efforts to widen the acceptance of mDL are in the DMV's pipeline, as they collaborate with both public and private stakeholders. Jenny Cheng, vice president and general manager of Google Wallet, expresses the importance of such integrations, saying, "Our research shows that having a way to save an ID to Wallet is critical in order for people to feel like they have a complete digital wallet."

The eventual goal is to have the mDL function alongside California’s Digital ID Framework, a system designed to confirm identities swiftly and securely. This forward-thinking vision for state services is echoed by State Chief Information Officer Liana Bailey-Crimmins, who thanked the pilot participants and touted California's lead in adopting and testing cutting-edge technology for a streamlined digital experience.
