Drivers along State Route 1 should prepare for shifts and delays as Caltrans embarks on a week of electrical work starting Monday as part of the larger Shoreline Highway Capital Preventative Maintenance Project. According to a recent tweet by Caltrans District 4, a traffic shift will be implemented in Point Reyes Station from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., to accommodate the ongoing efforts. While the work in Tomales during the same hours won't necessitate a traffic shift, one-way traffic control will be back in place for shoulder work beginning September 3.
Commuters and local residents can expect changeable message signs to remind them of the construction. This maintenance work is integral to the significant improvements along a nearly 14-mile stretch from Olema to the county line, including Tomales and Point Reyes Station. The project aims to enhance the journey for all who traverse these paths.
Some planned upgrades, detailed on Caltrans District 4's X post, include pavement resurfacing, repairs, restriping, and overarching improvements designed to fortify the route's integrity. Infrastructure enhancements will also target drainage through culvert replacements, widening shoulders to aid cyclists, and upgrading guardrails, crosswalks, and signage for safety and navigational ease. Meeting disability access standards is a critical component of the project, with upgrades that facilitate better access to amenities like the West Marin-Inverness School.

Expected to reach completion by Summer 2025, the project's progression remains subject to the whims of the weather. Caltrans expresses gratitude to motorists for their patience and urges them to exercise caution: "Please drive with caution. Slow for the Cone Zone and Be Work Zone Alert."
