The Canton Police Department is currently investigating a video that surfaced on social media, displaying what appears to be a Canton officer deploying excessive force on a suspect. After gaining online traction, Chief John Gabbard confirmed the video's authenticity, sparking public dispute and scrutiny.
Per Cleveland19, the incident occurred on August 24 when officers responded to a call about a sizable argument involving an estimated 10 to 15 individuals at the 1800 block of Morris Ave. near Mahoning Manor Apartments. A witness from the apartment complex, Amari Reese, told Cleveland19, "Guns out, suited up, helmets on,” remarking on the intensity of the police response. The scene grew chaotic as multiple people fled, prompting officers to give chase.
During a Canton City Council meeting, which drew a crowd of community members, concerns about police conduct were voiced. According to NEWS 5 Cleveland, the controversial video shows an officer, identified as Brandon Momirov, kicking 21-year-old Jaemiier McElroy in the chest. At the same time, the suspect was on the ground with his hands raised, compliant with the officers' orders. McElroy was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest despite this, a decision that has fueled the ongoing debate.
The tension rippled through to the City Council meeting, where Police Chief Gabbard acknowledged the incident. In reporting from WKYC, the footage shows McElroy compliant and kneeling moments before Officer Momirov's kick sent him sprawling. The Canton Police Department has yet to provide a formal verdict on the investigation's findings or detail any disciplinary action that Officer Momirov might face following the event.
