A recent fatal crash in Charlotte's North Division has prompted an investigation by local authorities. According to a statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the incident occurred on Sunday morning and involved a collision between a 2016 Mercedes Benz GLE 350 and a 2017 Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
The accident took place at around 9:08 a.m. in the 6500 block of Old Statesville Road, where officers discovered both vehicles with substantial damage. MEDIC responded quickly to the scene, transporting the Harley Davidson's operator and rider to the hospital with serious injuries. Unfortunately, the operator, identified as 47-year-old Dennis Paul Koch, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital.
Detective units specializing in major crashes, alongside a DWI Task Force and Motor Unit, were dispatched to investigate the circumstances of the fatal event. Additionally, the Crime Scene Search team was present to process the scene and gather evidence. The preliminary findings suggest that the Mercedes Benz failed to yield at a stop sign before entering the motorcycle's path, resulting in the ejection of both individuals on the Harley Davidson.
The driver of the Mercedes Benz, who has not been named, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. As the investigation into this tragic accident continues, the police department has not yet released further details about potential charges or the subsequent legal processes that might ensue. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward in aid of their ongoing investigation.
