A child was seriously injured after a dog attack in the University City Division, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, August 19, around 8:51 p.m. on the 5400 block of Cameron Commons Parkway. CMPD University City Division officers, along with MEDIC, responded to the scene following the attack.
Determinations from the initial investigation found that three dogs from the victim's household were released from the garage during the time a group of children were playing in the front yard, which led to the subsequent attack. The third dog reportedly began biting and dragging the victim down the driveway after two of the dogs had knocked the child to the ground in what was described as playful behavior. Adults present intervened to halt the attack, with two individuals firing gunshots to scare the dog, causing it to retreat.
The injured child was transported to Atrium Health Main by MEDIC with serious injuries. Following the incident, the dog involved was surrendered by its owner to CMPD's Animal Care and Control, where it will face a 10-day rabies quarantine before being euthanized. As the investigation continues, CMPD advises parents and guardians to keep a watchful eye on their children when around dogs.
More information on this case will be made available as it develops by the CMPD's Public Affairs office. Interested parties can reference the report number 20240819-2019-00 for further details on this incident.
