The corridors of Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital were recently abuzz with the pure joy of a 6-year-old boy who had just received life-changing news. John-Henry Lee, a patient who's been grappling with a rare congenital heart condition since birth, had one message for everyone he saw, "I'm getting a new heart!" as stated by Cleveland19.
After enduring a six-month wait and several surgeries for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), John Henry was about to undergo a heart transplant. The heartwarming moment was captured in a Cleveland19 video, showing the young boy enthusiastically making rounds while sharing his news.
John-Henry's previous surgeries, including his first at five days old, led up to this point. Dr. Hani Najm, a pediatric and congenital heart surgeon, had performed all of John-Henry's heart operations and was also tasked with the transplant procedure. The joyous announcement was a testament to a brave little boy's resilient spirit and a poignant reminder of the life-saving power of organ donation.
An equally touching moment from the series of events shows John-Henry addressing a hospital staffer by name in a TikTok video posted by Cleveland Clinic Children's. "Phyllis, I'm getting a new heart!" he exclaims, as recorded by ABC News. His excitement was infectious, and staff members were equally moved. One is seen giving John Henry an enthusiastic high five.
Now, post-transplant and following rehabilitation, John Henry has returned home. In a statement obtained by Good Morning America, his mother expressed her deep gratitude for the donor's family, "Organ donation saved my son's life. Without it, he wouldn't be living right now. We will take great care of this special heart and forever grateful to our donor and their family."
