The Cleveland Browns have locked in one of their defensive stars, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, with a three-year contract extension. As ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, the deal carries a value of up to $39 million, with $25 million guaranteed, ensuring Owusu-Koramoah's presence on the team as it looks to build on its defensive accomplishments.
Last season, Owusu-Koramoah, just 24, cemented his role with a Pro Bowl nod following standout personal statistics, which included 101 total tackles and 3.5 sacks, a personal best for the young player, according to the ABC News report. The linebacker, drafted 52nd overall in 2021, was poised to enter the final stretch of his rookie contract before this extension. Owusu-Koramoah has shown remarkable growth, demonstrating “'Matrix'-type athleticism," as penetrated by his general manager, Andrew Berry, in late July with a stop percentage ranking fourth among his peers at 9.3%.
Reflecting on Owusu-Koramoah's development and on-field prowess, Andrew Berry praised his star linebacker's trajectory. "He has like 'Matrix'-type athleticism where he just has rare movement skills and he can play behind the line of scrimmage. He's fast," Berry told ABC News Report. Recognizing the linebacker's progress in limiting his mistakes on the field, he added that Owusu-Koramoah's ability to minimize errors has "decreased over the past three years, and hopefully will continue to decrease as we go into Year 4."
The young linebacker's contributions have been vital to a Browns defense that prioritizes an aggressive style, as exemplified by Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz's strategies. Over his first three seasons, Owusu-Koramoah racked up impressive stats with 247 tackles, 30 for loss, 10 quarterback hits, five forced fumbles, and two interceptions, as per Cleveland Browns detailed. His agility and tackling abilities were instrumental in the Browns leading the NFL in key defensive metrics, including total defense and passing defense, showcasing his capacity to close in on quarterbacks like Brock Purdy, whom he sacked during a pivotal game.
With this extension, the Browns have signaled their intent to keep their defensive core intact, betting big on the young linebacker's continued ascent and contributions both on and off the field. Owusu-Koramoah has not only become a pivotal part of the team's defense but is also noted for his community work and positive energy off the field. As Berry remarked in the announcement obtained by the Cleveland Browns' official website, the organization anticipates Owusu-Koramoah representing the team for the years to come.
