Antoine Tolbert, a prominent community organizer in Cleveland, has been taken into custody on charges of extortion. As the head of the anticrime initiative New Era Cleveland, Tolbert was reportedly pushing for employment at a local convenience store through intimidation. Cleveland.com informs that court documents reveal Tolbert's alleged attempts to secure a security position for New Era at the store located in the Lee-Harvard neighborhood.

According to allegations, the situation escalated when Tolbert and his associates are said to have frequented the business, an action that allegedly troubled both employees and patrons. Rubin Swift, co-owner of the said gas station, expressed his concerns. "Some of them had masks on, "Some of them had masks on,” Swift said. “Some carrying weapons. They terrified our employees and customers. We do not want them here. We did not ask them to be here. They took over." he detailed in an interview acquired by FOX8 News.

The charges have drawn attention due to Tolbert's standing in the community. City officials have recognized him for his contributions to public safety despite raising eyebrows over the armed patrols his group conducted. Tolbert is expected to appear in court soon, and the nature of his legal representation is yet unclear.
