A devastating house fire claimed the life of a one-year-old child on Cleveland’s East Side, raising questions about fire safety in residential areas. Cleveland19 reports the tragedy in the Union Miles neighborhood on Marston Avenue, where firefighters responded to the emergency call around 10:30 a.m. yesterday.
Despite desperate attempts to rescue the toddler, identified as Chosen Marks Wright, she was found on the second floor in full arrest, per statements released by the Cleveland Division of Fire. The fire rapidly engulfed both building floors, challenging the firefighters as they navigated through the choking smoke and flames that roared through the house, already heavy with damage upon their arrival.
The incident also led to the injury of two adults. A 46-year-old woman sustained injuries requiring medical attention after leaping from the second-floor porch in a dire escape, detailing NEWS 5 Cleveland. A man treated at the scene suffered as well, although details of his condition have not been disclosed.
Lieutenant Mike Norman from the Cleveland Division of Fire described the dire scene, "It was so smoky up there. There was a lot of fire. (Firefighters) said when they opened the windows on the second floor, the black smoke just came rolling out of there," he told NEWS 5 Cleveland. The woman, having evacuated to the roof of the first floor, then jumped to reach the questionable safety of the ground below.
