Columbus Carjacking Culprit Indicted, Teen Slapped with Involuntary Manslaughter for Mother's DeathSource: Franklin County Sheriff’s Office

In a recent update to the tragic case surrounding the death of Alexa Stakely, a 29-year-old mother who died attempting to prevent her vehicle from being hijacked with her child inside, a Franklin County grand jury has returned a three-count indictment against 19-year-old Gerald Dowling. Noted by 10TV, Dowling now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and receiving stolen property. The incident, which unfolded on July 11 at an apartment complex on Columbus's southeast side, originally led to Dowling being charged with murder.

Caught in a moment of unspeakable horror, Stakely was struck by her own vehicle when she attempted to stop the carjacking, as per the details released by Columbus police and subsequently reported by The Dispatch. She had initially left the car running when picking up her son from the babysitter's apartment. When she saw her car being backed out, surveillance video captured her rushing towards the vehicle, yelling for the thief to stop, resulting in her fatal injury.

Dowling's indictment is a significant development following the events that led to Stakely's death. The NBC4i reports indicate that two 16-year-old boys have also been charged with murder in connection to the case. Both minors are being tried as adults, with prosecutors making the case based on the severity of the crime and its outcome. Dowling, the only adult suspect, was the last of the three to turn himself into the authorities.

It was last Wednesday, more than a week after Stakely's death, that police arrested Dowling. Released surveillance footage had shown two suspects running behind the stolen SUV shortly after the incident. Gerald Dowling, whose bond has been set at a towering $10 million, admitted to his role in the event, according to what police told 10TV
