The city of Columbus is seeking the closure of the downtown Avalon Night Club, a venue marred by violence, including a recent fatal shooting in June. The Columbus City Attorney's office confirmed to The Dispatch the filing of a motion to shut down the establishment located at 205 N. 5th Street in response to multiple violations, including failing to employ properly licensed security guards.
Incidents at Avalon Night Club have notably escalated since the beginning of 2023, with Columbus police responding to 78 calls resulting in nearly 30 police reports detailing fights, assaults, and incidents of gunfire, as the club has become a nucleus for troubling events immensely taxing the community's sense of security and peace; these events include a double homicide that occurred on June 14, as previously reported by NBC4i.
During the fatal incident in June, four individuals suffered gunshot wounds, and tragically, two of them, Desmond Taylor, age 27, and Ceilin Richard Peaks Smith, age 36, were pronounced dead, a dire outcome underscoring the club's safety deficiencies. In light of these events, Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein told ABC6, "We want Columbus to have a vibrant nightlife, but it needs to be safe," asserting the necessity for establishments to maintain a secure environment for patrons and residents alike.
Aside from the shooting, further troublesome incidents have encircled the club. Special duty officers recovered shell casings after shots were fired in February. Reports documented multiple assaults by and on the security staff, who, despite the glaring need for competent oversight, were not adequately licensed per the Ohio Revised Code, compounding the dangers that those inside and outside its walls faced night after night without an assurance of lawful protection and safe harbor.
Senior Assistant City Attorney Sarah Pomeroy's remarks to ABC6 emphasized the city's commitment, "The City remains committed to shutting down hubs of criminal activity like this nightclub." Patrons, employees and area neighbors deserve safety, not more of the same violence and lawlessness that have plagued this property for too long." The culmination of these events has led to the city's motion of contempt, reflecting an effort to end the cycle of violence associated with the Avalon Night Club.
