In the early hours of Monday, a tragic event unfolded on East Livingston Avenue. A head-on collision claimed the life of Deandra Brigham and left three others with severe injuries. According to the Columbus Police Department's media release, Brigham was driving her 2010 Nissan Altima east of Burlington Road when she encountered a 2007 Dodge Charger traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes without headlights.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:33 am, and despite the rapid response of Columbus Fire Medic #23, who pronounced Brigham dead at the scene by 3:38 am, the mishap presented an overwhelming challenge to first responders. Both the driver and the front seat passenger of the Dodge Charger, operating the vehicle in the wrong lane, were transported in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. Another passenger found in the rear seat was taken to Mt. Carmel East Hospital in serious condition.
Columbus's Accident Investigation Unit has taken charge of unraveling the specifics of the incident. Despite the passage of a couple of days, the investigation remains active. Details on what may have led to this devastating wrong-way crash are scant, underscoring the complexities that often shroud the early hours of probing traffic accidents.
While the Columbus community mourns Ms. Brigham's untimely departure, the incident underscores a chilling risk on our roads: the peril of unlit vehicles in the dead of night. While early results of the Columbus Police investigation are pending, this accident provides a somber reminder of the critical importance of road safety measures such as proper vehicle lighting and alert driving.
