In a nod to the world of global education, Sherry Daniel, a Columbus Gifted Academy educator, has been honored with a prestigious accolade. Selected among 400 U.S. citizens, Daniel has been awarded the Fulbright Teacher Exchange award for the 2024-2025 academic year, according to an announcement by the Columbus City Schools. The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Award, a program of the U.S. Department of State, recognizes Daniel's dedication to academia with this exchange aimed at promoting international understanding and cultural exchange.
Daniel, who teaches interdisciplinary studies at the Columbus Gifted Academy, will participate in the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms program. The Columbus City Schools website describes this program, including a specialized course and a symposium in Washington, D.C., followed by an international exchange lasting two to three weeks. As a global citizen, Daniel stated in a statement obtained by Columbus City Schools that she aims to help her students at CGA develop a sense of global citizenship.
The program stands as a testament to Daniel's love for travel and passion for broadening the horizons of her students and colleagues. Fulbright recipients are often at the forefront of cutting-edge research and establish enduring professional networks. They are known for sharing their international experiences upon returning to their home institutions, fostering future international collaborations and partnerships.
Although her specific program destinations are currently undisclosed, adding to her anticipation, Daniel expressed her eagerness to immerse herself in varied cultural landscapes. "Wherever I go, I will learn something more," Daniel said, as she looks forward to being a part of the expansive program. The Fulbright Program, boasting a rich legacy with notable alumni, including Nobel Prize laureates and Pulitzer Prize recipients, has been a bridge for participants from over 160 countries since 1946 in pursuit of academic and leadership excellence.
Amanda Reed, Director of Columbus Gifted Academy, wasn't surprised by Daniel's selection for this distinguished program. She relayed her pride in an interview with Columbus City Schools by praising Daniel's appreciation for cultures beyond her own. Daniel acknowledges the support from both CGA and the District and is excited to share her learned global perspective with her students. "I’m excited to just bring them the world and help them understand their place in it," Daniel said to Columbus City Schools.
