A decades-long series of cold cases has come to a closure as Christopher Michael Green, aged 52, has been sentenced to life in prison following a Dallas County jury trial, the first to employ Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG). Hailed as a groundbreaking achievement in forensic science, IGG was pivotal in identifying Green as the serial rapist behind the 2005 assault of a young mother, as well as five additional violent assaults, reports WFAA.
The lead prosecutor Leighton D’Antoni recounted the arduous journey of the case that spanned nearly a decade, stating, as per WFAA, "We have been working this case with the Dallas Police Department since we started the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) almost a decade ago". The case, once deprived of a definitive lead, found new hope as the DA's Office and Dallas PD collaborated with the FBI Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force, an alliance, that after exhaustive efforts, led to a significant breakthrough. A suspect DNA profile initially identified in 2001 resurfaced across six different cases yet remained elusive without a felony conviction to place Green's DNA in a national database, a detail reportedly shared by Irving Weekly.
Testifying against Green, one survivor voiced the long-awaited relief of justice: "You chose your path," she said. "I have been waiting for this day for 24 years." Despite Green's claims of innocence and testimony during his trial, DNA evidence corroborating his involvement in the crimes was irrefutable. "Predators can't live with the truth. Survivors can’t live without it. The truth came to light in this courtroom," D’Antoni emphasized during the closing argument as WFAA covered.
Ultimately, the tenacity of various departments and individuals—including the Dallas Police Department notably, Detective Carlos Cardenas, and Detective Todd Haecker, assisted the FBI Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force in utilizing IGG to establish familial links and hone in on Green. Four survivors confirmed Green's identity in a consequent photo lineup, and later, a DNA match verified by Green’s buccal swab connected him to all six cases. “Science proved that you’re it. Nobody else shares your DNA,” one survivor declared pointedly in a testimonial as recounted by Irving Weekly.
