In a significant step advancing their commitment to sustainability, Delaware County recently welcomed a Taiwanese delegation to participate in discussions about global climate change initiatives. The meeting, held by the Delaware County Council and participated by a 10-member team from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, laid the groundwork for sharing strategies on sustainability education and climate action. "It’s inspiring to know that a global network of individuals and organizations is working together to address the challenges of climate change," Elaine Paul Schaefer, a member of the County Council, highlighted in her statement obtained by Delaware County.
Accourding to Delaware County, one of the key topics covered was Taiwan's "New Generation Environmental Education" policy, which is designed to inculcate sustainability practices from an early age into the minds of students throughout their schooling. During the delegation's tour in the County's ceremonial courtroom, a deeper discussion germinated over a locally partnered café initiative to reduce waste, offering the guests a practical showcase of local sustainability efforts. Delaware County officials shared insights on their bid to minimize waste through their partnership with Capozzoli's Café, in a demonstration that left a strong impression on the delegates from Kaohsiung City.
Furthering the agenda, the presentations delved into sustainability plans and community engagement. Delaware County took the stage to explain its 'Sustain Delco' strategy, aiming to rally the community to tackle pressing climate change effects. In a presentation that introduced novel concepts to the visitors, the county's focus on public education and outreach shone through. "It was an incredible experience meeting with the delegates from Kaohsiung," said Interim Chief Sustainability Officer Rebecca Yurkovich.
An informal discussion unfurled in the cafeteria, attended by the likes of Chester City Mayor Stefan Roots and Justin J. Harris from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the latter who facilitated the linkup between the two groups. There, both delegations shared experiences and insights, engaging in thought-provoking discussions. Schaefer affirmed that through international partnerships, meaningful progress can be made in combating the climate crisis.
