A tragic incident on the Lodge Freeway claimed the life of a 33-year-old Detroit man this past Monday, according to Michigan State Police. The accident, which involved a rollover crash that left the victim's vehicle engulfed in flames, occurred around 9:55 p.m. near Glendale Avenue, as The Detroit News reported.
The incident unfolded after an unrelated two-vehicle crash had partially blocked the road. An individual from the first crash, to avert further collisions, was directing traffic away when they leaped over a cement barrier to avoid being hit by the oncoming car. The Detroit Regional Communications Center alerted state troopers immediately and upon arrival, they discovered the driver trapped in the overturned car, as detailed by CBS News Detroit. Sadly, the man was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
Detroit firefighters were quickly on the scene to extricate the driver before rushing him to receive medical attention. Despite their efforts, medical staff at the hospital pronounced him dead. This mishap brings forth the persistent and not-so-silent specter of road calamities as this death adds to the 566 highway fatalities in Michigan thus far in 2024. These statistics, provided by the Michigan State Police last week, punctuate a reality that danger is ever-present on these stretches of asphalt we trust our lives to daily.
In the wake of the crash, First Lt. Mike Shaw, a spokesperson for the Michigan State Police, implored drivers to adopt safer post-accident practices. "We want to remind drivers to stay in their vehicles and call 911 after a crash," Shaw emphasized. If it is possible, to safely move the car out of the travel lanes, Shaw advises doing so. He stressed that such actions would not affect crash investigations and highlighted the potential risks of exiting vehicles on freeways, as cited by WWJ Newsradio.
