In a tragic incident on Detroit's east side, a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head while he slept at home, early this morning. The gunfire, which police believe was a drive-by shooting, struck the boy inside a residence located in the 16000 block of Fairmount Drive. WXYZ reports that the child is currently stable, but the bullet remains lodged in his head with a possibility that surgery might be required.
Remarkably, with a home full of life, housing 11 souls, eight of whom were children, the brazen nature of the crime resonates with the sheriff's description of the act as "extremely cowardice." According to ClickOnDetroit, Detroit Police Chief James White called the shooters "cowardly" for firing into a home with numerous children present. At the dark hour of the shooting, 5 a.m., the boy found himself in the crosshairs of a dispute not of his making, a dispute police suggest may have involved an adult in the home.
Detroit law enforcement is now on the hunt for the responsible parties, looking for more than one shooter who made their escape in an unidentified vehicle. Police are presently attempting to piece together the make, model, and color of the vehicle used in the escape, with intentions to review video footage from the area. Chief White, as reported by CBS News Detroit, emphasized the innocence of the children involved, stating, "These kids have absolutely nothing to do with adult conflict".
