The Big Ten women's basketball tournament is destined for Detroit in 2028, with Little Caesars Arena selected as the venue for the event. This marks a significant milestone for the city as it will be the first time Detroit hosts the tournament, and for Little Caesars Arena, continuing its streak after having hosted the 2024 NCAA men's Midwest regionals and is slotted to host the NCAA Men's Final Four in 2027.
According to CBS News Detroit, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, “We look forward to partnering with the city of Detroit as they host the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament. Detroit will be an exciting post-season opportunity for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans, both locally and from across the country.” The tournaments, beginning in 2025, are set to rapidly expand to include 15 teams, following the addition of Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington to the conference.
As part of this expansion, Las Vegas is also slated to play a new, impactful role. The T-Mobile Arena will host the women's tournament in 2027 and the men's tournament in 2028, firmly planting the Big Ten flag on the West Coast. These moves represent a significant showering of the Big Ten basketball portfolio across a more diverse set of iconic American sports venues and cities.
The distribution of the tournaments takes on an almost equitable feel, with Indianapolis' Gainbridge Fieldhouse set to host both the men's and women's tournaments in 2025 and 2027, Chicago’s United Center taking the stage in 2026, and Las Vegas rounding off the men's in 2028. The Detroit Free Press shared that these moves align with the changing tides of college athletics, where flexibility and fresh opportunities are becoming more common.
