A Duke Energy line worker lost his life due to electrocution while servicing an area in northwest Charlotte, reigniting concerns among residents about the safety of Wandering Creek Drive. Reports confirm the incident occurred on Wednesday, and the worker was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency paramedics. Duke Energy expressed their condolences, releasing a statement saying, "Our hearts go out to our teammate's family and fellow coworkers," according to QC News. The company is currently investigating to learn more details regarding the tragic event.
The call reporting the electrocution came in around 2:35 p.m., a detail shared by WBTV. In the aftermath of the accident, approximately 1,100 Duke Energy customers were affected by a power outage, which was resolved by 7 p.m. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police stated that there is no criminal investigation related to the death, aiming to provide clarity amidst the community’s unsettled concerns.
Residents of the neighborhood have expressed a sense of unease, particularly because this incident is not the first safety-related event on Wandering Creek Drive. Less than a year prior, an explosion resulting from a propane tank detonation had taken place at the same address. "I don't know what the odds of something like that happening twice in the same place are," one neighbor conveyed, according to an interview by WCCB Charlotte.
Latanya Ledbetter, a local resident, shared her distress with WCCB Charlotte, stating, "I pulled up because I seen the polices and I seen the taped off by my house. So I’m wondering what’s going on." She and other neighbors report a persistent anxiety surrounding the lot, implicating perhaps something deeper than mere coincidence. One community member, connected to Duke Energy, revealed ongoing safety discussions within the company, "We're doing a training next month about electricity, actually, and just kind of how dangerous it is," he told WCCB Charlotte.
