On Tuesday morning, flames erupted within a temporary homeless encampment at Lee Gerner Park in Novato. The Novato Police Department and Fire Protection District worked to quickly extinguish the blaze, which began around 3:30 AM and engulfed tents, a fence, and a tree, as earlier described by Hoodline Bay Area. A thorough investigation was launched, looking into the fire's origins as a suspected arson case.
The city's emergency services safely evacuated all camp residents, with no injuries reported. But the fire left residents displaced, and their scant belongings turned to ash. Undeterred by the early morning chaos, the city swiftly moved to provide the encampment residents with new temporary housing, as noted by the Novato Police. The multi-agency response underscored Novato's commitment to its community members in crisis.
Scrutiny into the fire led to the arrest of two Novato residents, Brianna Giudice, 36, and Giovanni Allison, 39. In a follow-up to their initial response, Novato Police detectives and fire investigators connected the dots between this blaze and another unreported fire from the previous night. Through accumulated evidence, Giudice was identified as the perpetrator of both fires, and Allison was also implicated in the crimes. According to the Novato Police update, both individuals attempted to flee when discovered in a nearby vacant residence but were subsequently apprehended and face multiple charges, including arson and burglary.
