With the new school year on the horizon, the FBI Dallas division is ramping up its efforts to educate parents and caregivers about an insidious online threat they're calling sextortion. This malicious form of cyber extortion targets minors through social media and gaming platforms. It's a problem the authorities are taking seriously and so should we. The FBI has issued a warning to help educate families on the risks and on the steps to report such incidents to local law enforcement or directly to the FBI field office.
The phenomenon involves adults coercing or tricking children into providing explicit images or videos of themselves. "As you prepare to send your children back to school, #FBIDallas is warning parents and caregivers about the dangers of sextortion," reads the warning highlighted by FBI Dallas. They urge parents to openly discuss these threats with their children in order to identify and to potentially prevent sextortion from occurring. It is a critical conversation that could safeguard young people during a particularly vulnerable period of their lives.
Part of the challenge lies in the secretive nature of these crimes. Children often feel shame or fear which prevents them from speaking out. It leaves them exposed to continued manipulation. The FBI is emphasizing the importance of maintaining open lines of communication with kids and monitoring their online activities. Maintaining dialogue is key, knowing who your children are talking to, understanding the websites they frequent, and keeping aware of any subtle changes in their behavior could be telltale signs of trouble.
